Ryan Explains His Reaction To Oscars Mix-Up
ALL eyes were on those on stage when La La Land was incorrectly announced as the winner of Best Picture at the Oscars last month. While the reactions ranged from surprised to annoyed, Ryan Gosling had a slightly different response – the actor was photographed attempting to hold in giggles as the mix-up came to light.
“I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head,” Gosling – who took the lead role in La La Land opposite Emma Stone – told the Adobe Summit in Las Vegas, reports the BBC. “And then I just heard Moonlight won and I was so relieved that I started laughing.”

As the mistake was realised – after presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway had read out the film name, and the cast and crew of La La Land had taken to the stage to accept the award – the news began to spread amongst those in the auditorium, in a situation that Gosling described as “surreal”.

“I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd,” he said. “Guys were coming on with headsets and I felt like someone had been hurt. Truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won. It’s such a groundbreaking film, made for a million dollars, and incredible achievement and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognised.”
