Sabine Getty On How Motherhood Impacted Her Baby Memphis Collection
AS far as cult brands go, Sabine Getty is up there with the major players of the jewellery scene. Since she started her eponymous label in September 2012 (under her maiden name of Sabine Ghanem), her fine jewels have been worn by everyone from silver-screen starlets to the most influential of street-style stars. Now, as she releases the Baby Memphis collection – a younger, more playful counterpart to her signature Memphis line and her first collection since becoming a mother – we caught up with her to see how things have changed.
How do you think your designs have developed since you first arrived on the jewellery scene?
“Tough question! I think I’ve grown and learned a lot since I started. The approach to design hasn’t changed much, but my love and desire for colour and playfulness in jewellery has definitely grown. I think I’ve also become more conscious of considering accessibility when creating a piece. I want this collection to be easy and in the reach of younger customers who like my designs.”
Is there a reference or an inspiration that you always return to?
“I always like to look at colour and great colour combinations. Be it in paintings, like Hockney; design, like Memphis; fashion, like the colours of Yves Saint Laurent; or Art Deco jewellery, with its incredible combinations of coloured stones.”
The Girl With The Golden Touch
What is your favourite piece from the new collection?
“I love the snake rings in every colour combination and the multicoloured wave band is such a happy piece to wear.”
Has becoming a mother affected your designs or approach?
“I think it definitely did. It brought out a desire for lots of pink, freshness, youth and playfulness in the design. It also inspired us on the shoot of the lookbook, where we played around with some of my daughters toys using her stuffed unicorn and her pink milk bottle!”
The Baby Memphis collection is priced between #350 and £4,440, and is available now from Sabinegetty.com
