The Weekend Round-Up – 01/04/2017
THIS week was dominated by the UK’s exit from the European Union, as prime minister Theresa May officially triggered Article 50 and a predicted two years of negotiations surrounding our extraction commenced – although the meeting she held with Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon at the start of the week generated nearly the same amount of headlines – see why here.
When Theresa Met Nicola: The Seven Things We Learned
The real knock-on effect of the UK’s Brexit on the fashion industry is not yet known, and while many are predicting international brands to question their presence in the UK, the unveiling of H&M’s new high-street label, Arket, set to open on Regent Street late this year, showed that the Swedish retail giant isn’t one of them. In light of the European negotiations, the BFC also took proactive moves this week by unveiling its Manufacturing Database – a platform that shines the light on the many manufacturers available to the British fashion industry on home turf.
This week also saw three women take proactive moves to highlight misconceptions and mistreatment in their respective industries. Model Fernanda Ly joined a chorus of other models and spoke out about how models are often mistreated, revealing that she was once harassed on a photo shoot; actress Emma Thompson made an on-set encounter public where she had to stand up for a younger actress who was being asked to lose weight; and Adwoa Aboah bravely recounted her struggle with depression in a video for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry’s charity, Heads Together, in the hope that speaking out will end the stigma around mental-health issues.
In news to emerge on the celebrity front, Vogue cover girl Cheryl and her One Direction partner Liam Payne welcomed their first son; Khloe Kardashian revealed her anxiety at being pitted next to sister, Kylie, in the business stakes; Nicki Minaj was signed to Wilhelmina Models; Bar Refaeli revealed she is pregnant with her second child; Scarlett Johansson spoke about her distress over the recent photo hack; and Angelina Jolie explained how her latest role reminds her of her mother.
In arts and lifestyle news, HBO has announced it has picked up the wildly popular Neopolitan Diaries – Elena Ferrante’s masterpieces – to make into a series; Olivia Newton John hinted that a Grease reunion could be on the cards; Pharrell Williams’s life is being made into a musical; Elton John is on board to write the score for the new incarnation of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat; the first pictures of Vogue cover girl Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft emerged; Sienna Miller explained how she asked for a recent script rewrite, so that her character “wasn’t just a wife”; and Leonardo DiCaprio paid a heartfelt tribute to his “acting mom”.
The week ended on an inquisitive note: just what is Victoria Beckham doing in LA with the Late Late Show host James Corden? See the first trailer to be released on their antics below in This Week In Pictures.
