Why Charlotte Gainsbourg For Nars Will Answer Your Francophile Beauty Prayers
The concept of “French-girl beauty” is one much discussed in the hair and make-up industry, but how to create a product range which perfectly encapsulates that elusive brand of insouciant Parisian chic? The answer: ask a French girl, which is exactly what make-up brand Nars has done via its upcoming collaboration with Charlotte Gainsbourg – actress, singer and daughter of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg.
“I don’t typically wear a lot of make-up, so I was surprised that François Nars chose me for a collaboration,” Gainsbourg admitted. “But he made me feel so comfortable. I could do anything I wanted as long as it came from me, something personal. So that’s what I did, created this collection around my exact beauty needs.”
Comprising eyeliners in navy, grey and moss green as well as a Hydrating Glow Tint for that barely-there French-girl base, the collection also sees some exciting new additions to Nars’s most popular ranges. Adding to their already-excellent lip offering, this new collaboration sees the debut of the very wearable Lip Tint – a glossy hint of colour available in three shades – and the introduction of the Multiple Tint, a sheer version of the brand’s cult multi-purpose product.
Gainsbourg, who names Charlotte Rampling, Brigitte Bardot and her mother as her beauty icons, says that the products are “the stuff I need in my bag, what I hope to buy, a bit of this with a bit of that,” and notes the importance of them looking natural and effortless.

“I couldn’t go toward something that was opposite of me, so it had to be quite natural,” she said. “And, in the end colours were sort of obvious for me, nothing flashy, just tinted. Emotional if possible, my references had to do with actresses in films, so a natural cheek, redness from crying, running – things that move me.”
All of which, of course, requires a beautiful complexion (and of course if there’s one aspect of French-girl beauty more discussed than make-up, it’s skincare). And like any good girl brought up in Paris, it’s a classic French brand that Gainsbourg relies upon every day.
“I tend to use skincare by Biologique Recherche. I come back to it each time I wander off and try out new things – I should know by now that that never works for me,” she revealed. “Then it’s really just a question of camouflaging dark circles a little – not too much – and spots, and giving myself a little life in the cheeks. In the morning it’s too early for me to enhance lashes or lips, that can happen later in the day!”
